He was predeceased by : his father James Otis Powell; his wife Vonnell "Tinsy" O'Conner Powell; and his siblings, Neal, Lloyd, Ralph, Dewey, Eddie, Homer "Dutchman", Hollis and Zora.

He is survived by : his children, Anthony Powell (Candace) and Joni Sanders (Josh); his brother Elmo Powell (Debbie); and his grandchildren, James Landon Powell, Hudson Sanders and Emma Grace Sanders. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
