He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Mayes and Jamie Mayes; his children, April Denise Mayes and Mark Lewis Mayes; his parents-in-law, Melvin and Bernice Brooks; and his sisters-in-law, Barbara Metcalf, Julia Wilson and Pat Brooks.
He is survived by: his wife Stella Louise Mayes; his sons, Nathan Mayes (Latasha Watson) and Larry Mayes (Jessica); his siblings, William Lee Mayes (Shellia) and Eloise Mayes; his grandchildren, Rylee Mayes of Ringgold, Georgia, Breeanna Ellis of Ringgold, Georgia and Garrett Watson of Ringgold, Georgia; his siblings-in-law, Shirley Browning (Roy), Donnette Armstrong (Rick), Joan Rainey, Shellia Mayes (Lee) and Larry Brooks (Thomas Wilson); Hazel Cobb. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and special friend.
