He was predeceased by: his parents, Luther Crayton Spates Jr. and Marjorie B. Spates; his brother Clinton Leon Spates; and his nephew Gregory Shane Phillips. He is survived by: his brothers, Bobby Mayo and Marion "Mopey" Spates; and his siblings' children, Brandon Spates, Brittany Spates, Shelby Spates, Hannah Rae, Jessica McCann, Melody McCann and Butch Spates. He is also survived by several other family members and friends.
