He was predeceased by: his parents, John Helmey and Myra Helmey; his son David Helmey; his grandson Robbie Cail; and his stepgranddaughter Taylor Berry.
He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Dossey Helmey of Savannah, GA; his children, Sherri Lane, Janet Mayne (Michael), Eric Helmey and Barry Helmey; his stepsons, Michael Westberry and Hugo Carter; his grandchildren, Brian Cail, Kristen Cail, Matthew Cail, Sam Helmey, Hannah Helmey, Molly Mayne Joshua Helmey and Jacob Helmey; and his stepgrandchildren, Haley Carter, Tia Carter and Hugo Carter IV.
Visitation was held on Friday, December 5th 2025 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Baker McCullough Funeral Home, Hodgson Memorial Chapel (7415 Hodgson Memorial Dr, Savannah, GA 31406). A graveside service was held on Friday, December 5th 2025 at 2:30 PM at the Forest Lawn Memory Gardens (315 Greenwich Rd, Savannah, GA 31404).
