He was predeceased by: his brother Paul Akins; and his parents, Fred Akins and Rubye Deal Akins. He is survived by: his spouse Myrtis Halstead Akins; his daughter Tammie; his son-in-law Pierce Dickens; his son Wayne; his daughter-in-law Kristen Akins; his grandchildren, Matthew, Jennifer Dickens of Augusta, Kate Anna, Cole Breiner of Athens and Amelia Akins of Atlanta; and his sister-in-law Jo Akins of Statesboro. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the First Baptist Church Nursing Ministry 108 North Main Street, Statesboro, GA 30458 or to St Judes Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
