He was predeceased by: his parents, Jesse Akins and Iris Akins. He is survived by: his wife Charlotte Jarriel Akins; his daughters, Denise Young (Charlie), Donna Carnes (Allen), Beth Spence (Alan) and Jessica Hood (Michael); and his sister Etta Anne Groover. He is also survived by four sister-in-laws; thirteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
