He was predeceased by: his parents, Earnest Alan Durrence and Ora Elizabeth Martin Durrence; and his siblings, Evelyn Durrence Waters, E. A. Durrence Jr., Edward Martin Durrence, Mary Nell Durrence Zettler, James William "Bill" Durrence and Jesse Houston "Mutt" Durrence.
He is survived by: his wife Jo Ann Seckinger Durrence; his children, Gene Merrill Jr., David Glenn and Susan Elizabeth Durrence Balsavage (John); his grandchildren, Avery Balsavage, Aaron Durrence, Isabel Balsavage, Olivia Durrence and Alison Durrence; and his sisters-in-law, Doris Durrence and Dot Durrence. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Until the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, at age 89, he and Jo Ann enjoyed square dancing with the Peachtree Squares Square Dance Club, often twice a week.
