He was predeceased by: his parents, Hilbert X. Gavel and Wilma R. Giddens Nipper; and his sisters, Robin Lund and Lynn Gavel. He is survived by: his daughter Phoebe Cantrell (Chad); his granddaughter Imogene; his brothers, Alan, Frank and John Gavel; and his brother-in-law James Lund.

He chose to donate his body for anatomical study, a final generous act that reflects his thoughtful nature.
