He was predeceased by: his parents, Lucille Gladys Shields (Hagle) and Merlin Gale Shields; his grandsons, Ryan and Cory; his brother Bill; and his siblings-in-law, Don Mosman, Shirley Shields and Sandy Shields.

He is survived by: his wife Dorothy Shields of Afton; his children, Jeff Shields (Debbie) of Britt, Jon Shields of Shannon City and Julie McFarling (Gary) of Clive; his granddaughters, Mackenzie, Brooke, Paige, Morgan, Amber and Megan; his stepgrandson Zach; his siblings, Max Shields (DeDe) of Leander, TX, Bob Shields (Karen) of Mason City, Dan Shields (Cindy) of Johnston and Shirley Burr of Fordland; and his sister-in-law Helen Mosman of Creston. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are to East Union Athletic Dept. or Union County Fair.
