He is survived by: his mother Gerlinde "Jenny" Smith (Heinz) of Algona; his wife Pamla Smith of Sexton; his children, Dustin Penning-Smith of Algona, Matt Smith (Jacki Kinney) of Algona and Bethany Kofoot (Jacob) of St. Joseph; his grandchildren, Kendra, Charley, Shawna Penning-Smith, Leona and Lillien Kofoot; his siblings, Ricky Joe Smith (Amy) of Algona and Ronda Tietz (Mike); his brothers-in-law, David Penning (Anna), Dennis Penning (Julie) and Doug Penning (Janet); and his pet Shiloh. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
