She was predeceased by : her father Floyd Pope; and her sister Alvina Steele. She is survived by : her mother Adeline Pope (Espeland); her husband Allen Peterson; her close friend Stan Eimers; her children, Tina Hubbard (Matt) and Jordan Peterson; her grandchildren, Elaina, Elton and Elyse Hubbard; her siblings, Marcia Allen (Darrell) and Danny Pope (Teresa); and her brother-in-law Bob Steele. She is also survived by many nephews, cousins, other family members and friends.

Memorials may be made in Joni's name to the Kossuth County Cancer Support Foundation, who has provided much support to her over her cancer journey.
