He was predeceased by: his parents, Merwin "Jodie" Cunningham and Viola Cunningham; his in-laws, Rip and Connie Collins; his brother-in-law Kevin Janus; his sister Lana Trunkhill (Dick); his nephew Tony Trunkhill; his great-nephew Carter Trunkhill; his niece-in-law Gabe Trunkhill; his granddaughter Morgan Anne Cunningham; and his great grandchild Serenity Marie Dille.

He is survived by: his former wife Marlene Henderson; his wife Cherie; his brother Doc Cunningham; his children, Joe Jr. Cunningham (Tootka) of Baxter, Kim Bittner (Trevor) of Bondurant and Jed Cunningham (Tena) of Lu Verne, Iowa; his grandchildren, Shawn Cunningham (Sarah), Jordan Cunningham (Mackenzie Raridon), Chelsey Webster (Daniel), Cody Bittner (Taylor), Jacob, Mariah Bittner, Averie and Aiden Cunningham; his great grandchildren, Jaiden Cunningham, Noah Dille, Harper Cunningham and Azai Bittner; his sister-in-law Arty Janus; his brother Doug; his sister-in-law Jenny O'Berg; his daughter-in-law Karen Cunningham; and his sister-in-law Kay Cunningham.
