He was predeceased by : his parents, Edward Gerst and Ruby Gerst (Bodenhoffer); and his siblings, Fred, Nadine and George.

He is survived by : his children, C. Ed Gerst (Susan Koppenhaver), Bob Gerst (Linda) of Buffalo Grove, IL and Jerry Gerst; his grandchildren, Brandon Gerst (Megan), Brielle Gerst (Eric Kula), Dominique Gerst, Cassandra Druen (Michael), Sean Gerst (Samantha), Chad Gerst, Aaron Gerst (Adrian) and Andrew Koppenhaver (Emily); his great grandchildren, Leigha, Maddox, Madeline, Madden, Aminah, Milah, Riley, Amelia, Tori, Mia, Abby, Evan, Aidan, Asher and Ross; his brother Leo; and his sister-in-law Lois Gerst.
