He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Matthies and Gertude Matthies; his brother Stan Matthies; and his sisters-in-law, Margo Matthies and Jean Young.
He is survived by: his wife Verna Young; his children, Corey Matthies (Mindi) of Ames, Julie Wheatley (Ryan) of Adair, Jill Cary (Ben) of Anita and John Matthies (Erica) of Panora; his grandchildren, McKenna, Tyler, Chloe, Joselyn, Kale, Avery (Logan), Nolan, Carson, Madden, Knox and Lenox; his great grandchildren, Lincoln, Adriana and Layn; his siblings, Doug Matthies and Darla Snyder; and his brothers-in-law, Sherman Snyder and Kenny Young.
Memorials can be made to either the Anita Fire Department or Congregational Church in Anita and can be left or mailed to the funeral home, P.O. Box 523, Atlantic, IA 50022.
