He was predeceased by: his parents, John Douglas and Arcie Bell Russell; and his daughter Corrinne Sledge Russell. He is survived by: his wife Joyce; his children, Mary Bell Kernes, Linda Kay Trisler of Des Moines, Sarah Ann Taylor of Houston, MS, Grace Lynn Chittenden (Jerry) of Indianola, Robert Sledge, Roger Sledge of Ankeny and Randy Sledge of Colorado; and his sister Betty Faye Trentham of Pontotoc, MS. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, Iowa.
