He was predeceased by: his parents, Lester Hargens and Thelma Hargens (Winsor); his siblings, Robert, Eugene and Karen; his niece Jessica Hargens; his great-nephew Maurice; his siblings-in-law, Robert, John, James "Auggie", Walt, Joseph "Pete", Mary (Tommy) and Darlene; his nephew Ronnie; and his parents-in-law, LeRoy and Edna Sampson.

He is survived by: his wife Martha Hargens of Walnut, Iowa; his children, Ryan (Brenda Hargens) of Atlantic, Iowa and Regina (Chad Hansen) of Avoca, Iowa; his grandchildren, Austin Alff, Hannah (Mason Goergen), Connor Hansen and Darian Hansen; his brothers, Rick Hargens of Avoca, Iowa, Russell (Tina Hargens) of Avoca, Iowa, Roger (Beth Hargens) of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Rodney (Denise Hargens) of Avoca, Iowa; and his in-laws, Dave (Carol Sampson) of Hancock, Iowa, Wayne Sampson of Underwood, Iowa, Arnie (Carol Sampson) of Pikeville, Susan Libby of Walnut, Iowa, Kay Sampson of Walnut, Iowa, Barb Sampson of Avoca, Iowa and Margaret Sampson of Elliott, Iowa. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, other family and many friends.
