He was predeceased by: his parents, LaVern Schmitz and Lillian Schmitz; his siblings, Sharon Buck and Ervin Schmitz; his niece Wendy Buck; and his pet Bella.

He is survived by: his girlfriend Rae Simonin of Baldwin; his children, Stacy Reuter (Jacob) of Maquoketa, Marsha Simonson (Cory) of Maquoketa, Mitch Schmitz (Anna) of Lost Nation and Kristin Bowman (Ara) of Maquoketa; his grandchildren, Breanna, Braden, Lexy, Jace, Allie, Dalton, Charli and Hugh; his siblings, Douglas Schmitz (Marian), Marlene Bendixen (Thomas), Dianne Fuller, William Schmitz (Denise) and Denise Swanson (Jeff); his siblings-in-law, Donald Buck and Theresa Franck; and his nephew Josh Kaczinski.

In his final act of generosity, Greg gave the gift of life through organ donation.
