He was predeceased by: his parents, John Henry and Minnie Bruns (Engel); his wife Janice Chafer of Paul's Lutheran Church; and his siblings, Henry and Darlene Kirkendall.
He is survived by: his children, Jay Bruns (Melody) of Mingo, IA and Jody Merfeld (Tom Burke) of Dubuque; his grandchildren, Christopher (Tiffany), Jacob and Kaitlyn (Lucas Petersen); and his great grandchildren, Maisie and Jackson Bruns. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
