He is survived by: his wife Debra (Zanker); his children, Scott Shafer (Karen) of Richmond, VA, Steven Shafer (Pam) of Mansfield, MO, Brent Shafer (Lisa) of Victoria, MN, Sara Fisk (Adam) of Lenexa, KS and Emily Sartin (Kyle) of Wake Forrest, NC; and his grandchildren, Courtney (Jennifer), Scotty (Lexi), Helena, Kody, Cole (Hannah), Allie, Sidney, Samuel, Adelynn, Roman and Emmet.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you plant a tree or a peony bush in his honor, and do something kind for a neighbor.
