With solemn hearts, we announce the passing of John M. Smidt of Buffalo Center, Iowa, whose presence will be deeply missed, having departed on August 19, 2025 at the age of 91. He was predeceased by: his parents, Meindert Smidt and Almina Smidt (De Wall); his wife Jean Hillenga; his son Alan John Smidt (Teresa) of Kalona; his brother Warren; his parents-in-law, Ed and Erna Hillenga; and his siblings-in-law, Carol Clendenen, Goody Bergerud and Dean Haugland.
He is survived by: his daughter DeAnna Taylor (Michael) of Cherokee; his close friend Arliss Ullmann of Buffalo Center; his grandchildren, Amanda Christensen (Chris), Patricia Gobrecht (Brian), Jordan Taylor (Katelyn), Ryan Smidt (Stephanie), Sandi Beenken (Nate), Julianne Good (Corwin), Tyler Smidt (Lisa), Kyle Smidt (Laura), Emily Smidt, Allison Smidt, Nathan Smidt (Regina), Megan Smidt, Grace Smidt and Sophia Smidt; his great grandchildren, Taylor, Kylie, Aurora, Lola, Adair, Claire, Oliver, Annie, Drew, Johnny, Mercy, Bayley, Hudson, Gavin, Lydia, Elizabeth, Miriam, Isaac, Noah, Naomi, Chloe, Hannah, Phoebe, Esther, Abigail, Natalie, Amos, Joseph, Steven, Seth, Ethan, Elias and Felicity; his sister Grace Barnes of Coralville; and his siblings-in-law, Phyllis Smidt, Kay Hunter, Doris Haugland, Ed Hillenga (Vicki) and Dean Hillenga (Suzanne). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
