He was predeceased by: his parents, Wilburn Gibbs and Robbie Ray Gibbs (Scruggs); his spouse Larita Irene Haffner; his daughter Laura; and his sister Sandy.

He is survived by: his children, Shelly Strawhacker of Burlington, Rusty Gibbs (Brenda) of Pocahontas, Angela Abbott (John) of Fort Dodge and Randy Gibbs (Angie) of Fort Madison; his grandchildren, Trenton, Caroline, Mackenzie, Nick, Nate, Josh, Tyler, Justin, Hiliary, Hannah, Trevor, Trey, Reighan and Bayley Gibbs; his great grandchildren, Kayson, Emery, Tod and Cora; and his friend Sean Smull. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Memorials have been established for the Purple and Gray Foundation and Special Needs Foundation of Des Moines County.
