He is survived by: his wife Pamela Nelson of Burlington; his brother Steve Nelson (Sue) of West Burlington; his children, Heidi Nelson-Luedtke (Marc) of Burlington, Stacey Stevens (James) of Burlington, Carly Frankovic (Igor) of Queen Creek, AZ, Geoffrey Nelson (Lupita) of Fairfax, IA and Ruslan Nelson of Burlington; his grandchildren, Tate Nelson (Jada Wiseman), Mateo Rascon (Hannah Russell), Tomás Rascon, Séla Rascon, Liliana Frankovic, Dorian Frankovic, Avery Miller, Oliver Nelson, Miles Nelson, Simon Nelson, Abram Miller and Victor Nelson; his great grandchild Paisley Grace Nelson; his stepgrandchildren, Tyler Stevens (Taylor), Logan Stevens (Kelsey) and Breanna Stevens (McCain Richards); and his stepgreat-grandchildren, Josie Stevens, Valerie Stevens, Sawyer Stevens, Benson Stevens and Delilah Stevens. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for a scholarship in his honor and global and local missions.
