He was predeceased by: his parents, Alvin B. Hertel and Margaret Bentler Hertel; and his siblings, Martha Brueck, John and Joseph.

He is survived by: his wife Nancy Ann Newberry of Burlington; his daughters, Anne Breuer (Ron), Julie Glasgow (Jeff), Cathy Meeker (Mark) and Karen Engberg (Aaron) of Burlington; his grandchildren, DJ Glasgow (Samantha), Anne Palmer (Shay), Elizabeth Fridley (Seth), Mary Breuer, Reagan, Anna and Landon Engberg; his great grandchildren, Lila, Eva, Sophie Glasgow and Max Palmer; and his sister Susan Randolph of Burlington.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for Burlington Notre Dame Schools and Divine Mercy Parish.
