He was predeceased by: his parents, Herman Grote and Louise Grote (Janning); his parents-in-law, Walter and Martha Riesberg; his son Thomas Grote; his brothers, Vernon, Elmer, Erwin, Leonard and Louis Grote; and his siblings-in-law, Winona, Lois Grote, Willie, Pat Hinners, Larry, JoAnn Halbur and Gene Hinners.
He is survived by: his wife Donna Grote of Carroll; his children, Mary Jo Parrino (Richard) of Washington, DC, John Grote (Jeanette) of Arcadia, Don Grote of Carroll, Kristie Carlson (Stein) of Spencer, Ken Grote (Alexi) of Monkton, MD, Rick Grote of Phoenix, MD, Ron Grote of Breda, Scott Grote of Carroll and Bill Grote (Jessica) of Manning; his grandchildren, Alyssa Carlson, Christopher Parrino, Miranda Grote, Charles Parrino, Jacob Grote, Mark Parrino, Ashlynn Snyder, Kayli Grote, Josephine Grote, Louisa Grote, Kenny Grote, Payton Grote and Camden Grote; and his in-laws, Charla Grote, Jean Grote, Jerry, Verna Riesberg, Gene, Nancy Riesberg, Darlene Hinners, Randy and Jeri Riesberg. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Friday, September 4th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Saturday, September 5th 2026 from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM. A rosary was held on Friday, September 4th 2026 at 7:00 PM at the Sharp Funeral Home (226 W 8th St, Carroll, IA 51401). A Mass was held on Saturday, September 5th 2026 at 10:30 AM at the St. John Paul II Parish – St. Lawrence (1607 N West St, Carroll, IA 51401). A burial was held on Saturday, September 5th 2026 at 1:00 PM at the St. Bernard's Cemetery (112 Granite Ave, Breda, IA 51436).
