He was predeceased by: his parents, Conrad Mertens and Kathryn Wilken Mertens; his wife Barbara Peacock Thomas; his siblings, Dorothy, Virginia Mertens and Conrad James "Jim" Mertens; and his brother-in-law Mike Wellman.
He is survived by: his children, Mary Kay Eischeid (Ken) of Carroll, IA and Douglas Mertens (Connie) of Hartwick, IA; his sister Kathryn "Kay" Holvey (Ronnie) of Fort Madison, IA; and his siblings-in-law, Karen Wellman of Fort Madison, IA, Dean Krogmeier (Mary) of Innsbrook, MO and Wayne Krogmeier (Tami) of Plymouth, MI. He is also survived by three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Gentiva Hospice in Carroll, IA.
