He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond McDermott and Lenore McDermott (Dolphin); his brother Alan McDermott; his daughter Shelley McDermott; his siblings, Ken McDermott and Betty Vance (Jack); his sisters-in-law, Mary McDermott and Marjorie McDermott; his stepdaughter Lisa Gleed; and his stepson-in-law Ron Begtel.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara McDermott of Show Low, AZ; his children, Kim Freeman (Kevin) of Cedar Falls, Mark McDermott of Cedar Rapids, Steve McDermott (Lisa) of Olathe, KS, Kristi Schmitt of Cedar Falls and Richard McDermott of Los Angeles, CA; his brothers, Earl McDermott of Cascade, Jerry McDermott (Shirley) of Cascade and Howard McDermott (Carol) of Monticello; his sister-in-law Maureen McDermott of Cascade; his stepchildren, Stephanie Dawson (Bill), Anthony Bicar (Debra) and Allison Begtel; and his stepson-in-law Paul Gleed. He is also survived by six step-grandchildren; and seven step-great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 16th 2026 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the St Matthias Catholic Parish Church (411 4th Ave NW, Cascade, IA 52033). A Mass will be held on Wednesday, September 16th 2026 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the same location.
In Lieu of flowers a Robert F. McDermott Memorial Fund has been established.
