He was predeceased by : his parents, Robert Hayes and Madeline Pint Hayes; his wife Nancy Hemsath; his daughter Ann; and his sister Kathy Meinders.

He is survived by : his children, Mark (Cheryl) of Colo, Brian (Julie) of Cedar Falls, Scott (Cindy) of Waterloo, Bruce (Mercedes) of Cedar Rapids, Eric of Cascade, Joel (Anne) of Altoona, Paul (Bryn) of Cedar Rapids and Ellen Woods (Derrick) of Waterloo; and his siblings, Barbara Hayes of Wellington, David Hayes (Patti) of Columbia, Judy O'Connor of Waterloo, Nancy Whittemore of Newhall, Calif and Holly Hayes of Rockwall, Texas.. He is also survived by 29 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Saint Patrick Catholic School.
