She was predeceased by: her parents, James O'Brien and Armella O'Brien (Sturm); and her sister Sheila Sundell. She is survived by: her husband Gary Ernst; her sons, David of Cedar Rapids, IA and Matthew of Morrisville, NC; her granddaughter Zayla; her sister Patricia Wilson of Scottsdale; and her pet Murphy. She is also survived by loving family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Mercy and the Family Caregivers Center of Mercy.

“I sat with Mary for the last hour of her stay at the Hospital before she got to go home and rest. You said something that I will never forget. "If you believe in God, it's not the last time you are going to see someone". You two have been in my prayers since the day I had the pleasure of meeting you. Amazing People like you make every second of the job worth it. I was saddened by the news of Mary's passing and I am so sorry for your loss.”
