He was predeceased by: his parents, Guy Smith and Claudine Smith (Sapp); his sister Jean; his daughter Cindy; his parents-in-law, Leroy and Bessie Hand; and his brother-in-law Terry Hand.
He is survived by: his wife Sally Hand of Marion, Iowa; his daughters, Lori Cooper (Jim) of Eufaula and Tracy Smith (Dean Zirbel) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his siblings, Guy Smith of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Shirley Henel of Kansas City, Sherry Leahy of Cedar Rapids and Donna Caldwell of Augusta, Georgia; his half-sisters, Linda Hufeld of Eldon, Debbie Davis and Sue Radeke; his grandchildren, Nicole Gerdes (Justin), Jessica Manternach (Joe), Spencer Chapman (Maria), Amber Chapman, Jay Cooper and Josh Cooper; his great grandchildren, Gavin, Griffin Gerdes, Maci, Marleigh, Mila Manternach, Harper, Willow Chapman, Kaiya and Kinsleigh Chapman; and also Carol Smith of Abingdon, Illinois. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Alzheimer's Association, any Humane Society, ASPCA, or local animal shelter are appreciated.
