He was predeceased by : his parents, Raymond Messamaker and Orpha Messamaker (Bennett); his sisters, Sandra Bruntmyer and Meuricia Bruntmyer; his brothers-in-law, Jim Rees, Ray Bruntmyer and Mike Bruntmyer; and his nephews, Kevin Rees and Joe Bruntmyer.

He is survived by : his former life partner Eloise Ashby; his wife Selina Alba; his children, Tony Messamaker (Maegan), Matt Messamaker (Cindy) and Jocelyn Casteel (Mike); his grandchildren, Quinton Casteel, Keaton Casteel, Ethan Messamaker, Ryan Messamaker, Trenton Clayworth, Kaelyn Casteel, Isaac Messamaker, Raegan Messamaker, Mason Messamaker, Kallie Messamaker and Bentley Clayworth; and his siblings, Doug Messamaker (Janet) and Barbara Rees. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.

A memorial has been established to the Welcome Home Soldier Monument in Albia.
