He was predeceased by : his parents, Robert S. Gordon and Wilma Kinney Gordon; his brother Jim; and his brothers-in-law, Ronald Sundermann and John Renz.

He is survived by : his children, Matthew Joseph (Lisa) of Cedar Falls and Ann Wilkie (Anthony Startt) of Takoma Park, Maryland; his wife Dianne Wilkie; his sisters, Trudy Sundermann of Cedar Rapids and Jennifer Renz of Elmira; his siblings-in-law, Linda Gordon of Iowa City and Scott Wilkie (Sally) of Larrabee; and his grandchildren, Alexa Gordon, Sam Startt and Emily Gordon.

John was an active member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder, served on the Trustees, Foundation Board, and chair of the Memorial Committee.
