He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Burns, and Dorathy Burns, Sr. (Schafer). He is survived by: his wife Karen Burns of Clinton, IA; his children, Nancy Burns of Camanche, IA and Ross Burns (Vicki) of Clinton, IA; and his granddaughters, Samantha Kenworthy (Kyle) and Rachel Burns.

Posthumously, he was able to donate tissue to the Iowa Donor Network.
