He was predeceased by: his parents-in-law, Wayne and Marie Pitkin; his son Darrell Smith; his daughter-in-law Brenda Smith; his brother Bob Smith; and his siblings-in-law, Mary Smith, Diana Meinke, Dennis Pitkin and Don Gruver.

He is survived by: his wife Donna Smith of Creston; his son Randy Smith (Alissa) of Greenfield; his siblings, Ron Smith of Shannon City and Jean Gruver of Clive; his daughter-in-law Becci Berry of Winterset; his grandchildren, Carla Smith (Kara Beaver) of Harvey, IA., Raegen Smith (Eric Morley) of Ottumwa, Ashton Scadden (Zach) of Winterset and Lane Smith of Winterset; and his great grandchild Ridge Scadden.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are to a local Animal Rescue Effort.
