He was predeceased by: his parents, Holly Lee and Candacy Elzeda Carpenter (Harding); his siblings, Lee, Bill, Lyle "Red" and Velda Ann "Tootie"; his brother-in-law Dr. Andrew Cracker; his niece Mary Ann Cracker; and his grandchild Thomas Peter.
He is survived by: his wife Cintra Sue Cracker of John's United Methodist Church; his friend Bix; his children, Kimberlee Beauchamp (Tom) of Pittsboro and Dr. Kevin Carpenter (Stacie) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his sibling's children, Kandy (Bill) of Chariton, Iowa and Dr. John Cracker (Nadia) of Chapel Hill; his grandchildren, Caitlin (PJ), Michael (Jen), Maren, Abby (Nathan), Sam (Connor) and Jessica (Joel); and his great grandchildren, Aletta, Jackie, Mabel, Murphy, Millie and Jonas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church or to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa to support the college's department of classical and modern languages.
