Daniel Ghys Obituary
Daniel L. Ghys, 72, a resident of Davenport, died Sunday, June 23, 2013 at Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme, Davenport, following complications from a recent surgery. Funeral services and a Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at St. Mary"s Catholic Church, 516 Fillmore St., Davenport.
Burial will take place in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home, downtown Davenport with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. Mary"s or to the family. Dan was born on October 20, 1940 in Rock Island, a son of Frank and Ruth (Huntley) Ghys.
He served our country in the Army during the Vietnam War serving as a medic in Germany. He married Nancy Nylin on September 22, 1967. He later was united in marriage to Helen Creech on July 27, 1994 at St. Mary"s Catholic Church, Davenport. Dan had worked for International Harvester, Alter Metal Recycling, and served as the maintenance supervisor at Royal Neighbors of America, Grandview Terrace Retirement Home.
He enjoyed fishing, cooking, television, crossword puzzles, and traveling, especially to New Orleans. He had a tremendous sense of humor and enjoyed making others laugh. Dan cherished his family, and would religiously attend their events and activities. Dan is survived by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Angie Martin, both of Davenport; a daughter-in-law, Lola Ghys, Lincoln City, OR; grandchildren, Chris Haskins, Jay Haskins, Amanda Haskins, Ashlee Marie Martin, Elizabeth Hansen, and LeAnn Hanson; great-grandchildren, Constance, Starr, Jay Paul, Jr., Austin, Dade, Brittany, Danielle, Amber, Caitlin, Michael, Michael W., Xavier, and Samir; step-sons, James and Ronnie Mathias, of Davenport; a sister, Roberta Hall, Geneseo, and a sister-in-law, Delores Ghys, Coal Valley.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Terry in 1995, a son, Dan Jr. in 2005, his parents, a brother, Frank Ghys, and sisters, Dorothy Mandel, and Janet Ledbetter. May they rest in peace.
