He was predeceased by: his parents, Ernest "Ernie" Mess and Marjorie Ann Mess (Hamann); his wives, Sonja Elaine Rock and Maria Anna Miller; his stepfather John VenHorst; his sister Jeanne Krambeck; and his granddaughter Madelyn "Maddie" Mess.
He is survived by: his children, Teresa Nelson (Mark) of Jenison, Roxanne Nagel (Mike) of Wildwood, Missouri, Rick Mess (Tammy Wells) of Davenport and Mark Mess (Michele) of Eldridge, Iowa; his stepchildren, Lori Ann Dudley (Steve), Heidi Mussack (Dan), Trudy Ecoffey (Chuck) and Henry Miller (David); his grandchildren, Travis Nelson (Danee Conley), Stephanie Mueller (Ian), Sydney Nagel, Aden Mess, Bram Mess, Cael Mess, Cameron Mess, Mitchell Mess, Marshall Mess and Courtney Davison; his great grandchildren, Orson "Ori" Mueller, Pierce Mueller, Alivia Davison and Jaxon Davison; his sisters, Joanne Oberbreckling of Davenport and Jane Weber (Gary) of Davenport; and his brother-in-law Chuck Krambeck. He is also survived by 12 step-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials may be made to the Scott County Historical Society at Summit Church.
