He was predeceased by: his father Theodore "Ted" Peterson; his son Melvin "Dale" Sims II; his stepfather Jerry Peterson; and his son Charles Sims. He is survived by: his mother Marlene "Happy" Peterson (Powell) of Moline; his wife Frances Cashin; his children, Marcus Thibodeaux (Mike) of Bettendorf, Stacey Smith (Charles) of Chattanooga, TN, Tina Sims-Steinbeck (Greg) of Cedar Falls, IA and Sherry Upton of North Liberty, IA; his grandchildren, Ethan Smith (Kayla), Michael Sexton (Kristina), Mia Palen, Joshua Upton (Nicole) and Jessica Williams (Dillon); his sisters, Karen Miklas (George) of LeClaire and Susan Etheridge of Moline; and his close friend Robin McGraw of Wisconsin. He is also survived by 18 great grandchildren.
A celebration of life was held on Thursday, December 4th 2025 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home (614 Main St, Davenport, IA 52803).
