She was predeceased by: her parents, Isaac Edward Wade and Bertha Etta Wade (Richardson); her husband Lawrence Gates; her great grandchild Baby Crawford; her siblings, Ida, Nelia, Addie, Margaret, Daphne, Ellen, Rose, Violet, Ernest and Carl; and her nieces and nephews, Charles, Franklin, Earl, Charlette, Carrol, Lester Jr., Nadine, Robert and Wade.
She is survived by: her son John Thomas Gates (Sharon); her grandchildren, Melissa Crawford (Jamel) and Scott Gates (Elizabeth); her great grandchildren, Brooke Keller, Jace Crawford, Grayson Gates and Jacoby Crawford; her niece Mary Ellen Rice; and her nephews, Bill Jors (Teresia) and Jeff Jors (Susie).
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 24th 2026 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Hamilton's Near Highland Memory Gardens (121 NW 60th Ave, Des Moines, IA 50313). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 24th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
In 1984, Catherine received the YWCA Women's Achievement Tribute Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the greater Des Moines area through professional excellence, public service, and dedication to advancing women into management positions.
