With heavy hearts, we announce the death of David Joe Nelson (Des Moines, Iowa), born in Cherokee, Iowa, who passed away on May 20, 2026 at the age of 84. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.
He was predeceased by: his parents, Joe Nelson and Ruth Nelson; and his son Joe. He is survived by: his wife Jean Nelson; his siblings, Jim Nelson and Libby Miller; his children, Anne, Bill and Mary Nelson (Brian Lapis); his son-in-law Jason Pontin; and his grandchildren, Alonzo and Ada Pontin. He is also survived by in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 28th 2026 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at 4126 Ingersoll Ave, Des Moines, IA 50312.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the United Church of Christ, the YMCA of Greater Des Moines, or Plymouth UCC. You may also wish to donate your time and skills in your community, or find another way to help a friend or a stranger in need.
