He was predeceased by: his parents, James Patrick Lela, Sr. and Naomi Lela (Young); and his grandparents, Ivan, Mildred Young of Des Moines, Morgan and Mary Baldridge of Peoria, IL.

He is survived by: his son James Lela III (Amanda) of Grimes. He is also survived by many cousins, and several nieces and nephews.
