He was predeceased by: his parents, Vernon Mertz and Martha Mertz (Fannon); his wife Phyllis Travis; his son Greg; and his brothers, Jerry and Jim.
He is survived by: his children, Doug Mertz (Deb) of Urbandale, Iowa and Kim Kroeger (Gerry) of Lake Oswego, Oregon; and his grandchildren, Travis, Katie, Kara, Kyle, Meredith and Michael. He is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
