He is survived by: his children, Jackie Powell and Jeff Powell; his grandsons, Cody Lenz, Justin Lehman (Sabrina) and Brandon Lehman (Daphne); his great grandchildren, Edwin, Braxton, Phoebe, Paislee, Xander and Ezekiel; and his siblings, Peggy Drain, Paula Collins (Hugh) and Bob Powell (Kim).

“My sympathies to all of the Powell family and fellow friends of John. I have known John since 1972 when I transferred to Iowa State and he was one of my first friends in Ames. We used to meet at The Veteran's Outreach Center in the basement of Alumni Hall on campus to eat lunch, talk with other fellow veterans and play cards during breaks from class or over lunch. The friendship continued even after we both graduated. And I used to drive from my Illinois home for ISU football games in the fall.”
