He was predeceased by: his parents, John "Wayne" Bernath and Reta Bernath (Joughin); his wife Miriam "Max" Bernath; and his brothers, Larry and Loyal.
He is survived by: his daughter Meredith Aukes (Steven); his grandson Wayne; and his brother Leo Bernath (Patricia). He is also survived by his sisters-in-law and brother-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Visitation was held on Monday, July 20th 2026 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Iles Westover Chapel (6337 Hickman Rd, Des Moines, IA 50322). A celebration of life was held on Tuesday, July 21st 2026 at 10:30 AM at the WESTOVER CHAPEL (6337 Hickman Rd, Des Moines, IA 50322). The military honors was held on Tuesday, July 21st 2026 at 12:30 PM at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Lee's memory may be directed to Central Iowa VA, the Urbandale Food Pantry, St. Stephen's Church, or the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
