He was predeceased by: his parents, Alta Bates and Martha Bates (Petersen). He is survived by: his wife Kay; his children, Robin Bates (Angie), Elisa Overstake (Mike), Jenny Blackburn and La Von Cooper (Greg); his grandchildren, Taylor, Reaghan Bates, Brianna (Andrew Accola), Remington, Hunter Overstake, Katie, Anthony, Dawson Mussmann, Jed, Amber, Lili and Madi Cheramy; his siblings, Kevin Bates and Marie Smith; and his pets, Sadie and Preston. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Thursday, July 10th 2025 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Schultz Funeral Homes (722 8th St, DeWitt, IA 52742). A masonic service was held on Thursday, July 10th 2025 at 6:00 PM at the same location. A funeral service was held on Friday, July 11th 2025 at 12:00 PM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Clinton County Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) or St Jude's Hospital for children.
