He was loved and cherished by many people including: parents: Melvin Schmitt and Marion (Breitbach) Schmitt; wife: Karen (Dennis); children: Kristy (Jared) Heim, Andy (Jessica) Schmitt, and Val (Ben) Ginter; grandchildren: William Wemett, Joseph Wemett, Annica Schmitt, Ambrie Schmitt, James Heim, Mary Heim and Tate Ginter; siblings: Mary Lou Thornburg and Dan (Ann) Schmitt; sisters and brothers-in-law: Patty (Guy) DeVries, Laura (Tim) Majerus, Donny (Jill) Sendt and Dean Sendt; in-laws: Darrell and Marilyn Sendt; brother-in-law: Albert "Albie" Sendt; pet: Sharon (the beagle); other: Rev. Dianne Grace, Joe, Dan, Diane, Scott and Pam.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 9th 2026 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM and on Saturday, October 10th 2026 at 9:30 AM at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory (2595 Rockdale Rd, Dubuque, IA 52003). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 10th 2026 at 10:30 AM at the same location.
In lieu of flowers a Dennis Schmitt memorial fund will be established.
