He was predeceased by : his parents, Leo Bird and Rita Bird (Schaul); and his siblings, Merlin Bird, Charles Bird (Germaine), Francis Bird (Virginia), Clyde Bird and Anna Mae Barry (Frank).

He is survived by : his wife Verna Bird; his children, Carol Petitgout (Marty) of East Dubuque, IL, Eugene Bird Jr. (Joy) of Waukee, IA and Marilyn Bird (Edwin Barber) of Scottsdale, AZ; his grandchildren, Zach Bird of Chicago, Abby Berger (Zach) of Iowa City, Sophia Bird of Des Moines, Stephany and Natalie Stueck; and his sister-in-law Ruth Bird.

“Verna,Carol, Eugene and Marilyn, Sending condolences to you on occasion of Gene’s death. It was bad news here too. He was a guy that a person would remember once you met him. He told me some stories from when he was in the service which I have often retold to others. I can remember him from the one year that I was in Colesburg High School(1952-53) where he was two or three years ahead of me-rather quiet but “in charge”. He always seemed satisfied with who was in his skin! P&C Domeyer”
