He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold Joseph and Mary Alice Whalen (Lerdahl); his sister Theresa Jotham; and his siblings-in-law, Mary Blocklinger, Janis Lewis, Robert and Duane Bradfield.

He is survived by: his wife Ann E. Whalen of John's Episcopal Church; his children, Russell Timothy Whalen, Alexis Ernzen (Noah Kapparos) and Lillian Whalen; the mother of his children Melissa Ruh; his son Steven Patrick Whalen (Kayla); his grandchildren, Eryn Wernimont (Jacob), Mary Sarah Trpkosh and Summer Ann Whalen; his great grandchildren, Griffin, Leland, Zachery and Cody; his sister Colleen Sroka (Charles) of Dubuque; and his sister-in-law Natalie Himes of Arlington, TX. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Hospice of Dubuque.
