With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Mel J. Berendes of Dubuque, Iowa, born in Bellevue, Iowa, who passed away on June 8, 2023. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

He was predeceased by: his parents, Earl Berendes and Sylvia Berendes Sr. (Frantzen); his parents-in-law, Merlin and Lyda Herrig; his daughter-in-law Kristi Berendes; his siblings, Loras Berendes, Earl Berendes (Ruth) and Phyllis Hutter (Dave); and his brother-in-law Eldon Rowan.

He is survived by: his wife Marilyn Herrig; his sons, Chad Berendes (Nancy) of Dubuque and Mike Berendes (Julie) of Whitestown, IN.; his grandchildren, Cayla, Mitchell (Carissa), Jenna, Nolan Berendes, Sam, Jackson, Sawyer and Owen Berendes; his great grandchildren, Cabe and Maeve Berendes; his sister Anita Rowan; and his siblings-in-law, Phyllis Chantos (Tim) and Don Herrig.

In lieu of flowers a Mel Berendes memorial fund will be established.
