He was predeceased by: his parents, Harold Meyer and Glendola Meyer (Knake); his in-laws, Bob and Ann Gilligan; and his brothers, Ron Meyer and Wendell Meyer.
He is survived by: his wife Karen Gilligan; his daughter Sadie Robbins (John); his grandchildren, Stella, David and Jonah; his daughters, Emily Harold (Nate) and Megan Gosse (Matt); his grandchildren, Luna and River; his sons, Stephen Meyer (Leigh) and Mike Meyer (Elissa); his sisters, Linda Meyer and Ruth Crabtree (Lonnie); his sisters-in-law, Fran Meyer and Jackie Trpkosh (Tim); and his in-laws, Susie Gilligan, John Gilligan (Cindy), Brian Gilligan (Linda) and Amy Gilligan (Michael Shubatt). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Wednesday, September 9th 2026 from 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home & Crematory (3860 Asbury Rd, Dubuque, IA 52002). A funeral service was held on Thursday, September 10th 2026 at 11:00 AM at the Church of the Resurrection (4300 Asbury Rd, Dubuque, IA 52002).
In lieu of flowers, donations will be used to memorialize Merle at some of his favorite places.
