He was predeceased by: his parents, Hillis "Doc" Helmer and Florence Helmer (Schueller); his former wife Rosemary Helmer; his son Jeffrey Allen Helmer; his sister Joan Helmer; his stepbrother Harold Muntz (Delores); and his niece Michelle Tedrow.
He is survived by: his wife Pamela Helmer of Dubuque; his daughter Lori Johnson (Ron) of Olathe, KS; his grandchildren, Zach, Alex, Lauren and Jake; his great grandchild Cayden; and his nieces and nephews, Ted Muntz (Debi), Tim Muntz (Cindy), Tom Muntz (Sarah), Chris O'Brien (Dave) and Cherie Laufenberg (Bob). He is also survived by several great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, October 12th 2026 from 9:00 AM to 10:15 AM at the Church of the Resurrection (4300 Asbury Rd, Dubuque, IA 52002). A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 12th 2026 at 10:30 AM at the same location.
Memorials may be given in Dick's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
